Membrane proteins are proteins that are incorporated into the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane. Divided into:

  • 'peripheral proteins - they do not pass across the entire membrane, but are located on the inside or outside of the cell membrane,
  • integral proteins – pass through the entire phospholipid bilayer one or more times.

Membrane proteins serve, for example, as ion channels, membrane receptors or ensure the transport of various substances across the membrane.
