The sucking reflex is elicited by touching or swiping a spatula, mentolabially or nasolabially or directly on the lips; when the reflex is present, the lips curl up. [1] Rarely, the patient reacts to irritation by literally "snapping" the lips, the so-called bulldog reflex.[2] Similar to the labial reflex, it is physiologically present only in infants. Pathologically, it is a manifestation of frontal release. [1]
