In some ways, the bronchi resemble the trachea - again in them we find hyaline cartilages (however of a rather irregular shape), smooth muscle cells, and seromucinous glands. On larger sections, lung tissue (or lung alveoli) may be located outside the bronchi.
- The epithelium is multi-row cylindrical with cilia (as in most places in the respiratory tract).
- Lamina propria (vessels, seromucinous glands and some smooth muscle).
- Smooth muscle causes postmortem contraction of the wall, so the mucosa is folded into small cilia (during life it adjusts the patency of the bronchi).
- Hyaline cartilage surrounded by perichondrium.
