It is a type of histological stain where ferric haematoxylin is used to stain the nuclei and stained with acid fuchsin and picric acid. Ferric haematoxylin, unlike alum haematoxylin, does not fade on exposure to picric acid. The result of the staining: the nuclei turn dark brown, the collagen fibres turn red and the muscles turn yellow.
(At our faculty, the 3rd Faculty of Medicine, a modified staining method is used. The nuclei are stained with ferric hematoxylin, the connective tissue with saturn red, and the mucopolysaccharides with yellow picric acid.)
