Alternate target

An alternate target is a parameter, usually biochemical, that can be monitored in the klinical studies instead of a more difficult to detect clinical target, i.e. the prognosis of patients. An important condition for the meaningful use of a surrogate target is that the correlation between the surrogate target and the monitored clinical target is demonstrated in a sufficiently significant manner. Overuse of surrogate targets is one of the marketing tricks used to promote a therapeutic procedure.
