Analgesics
From WikiLectures
Analgesics are drugs that suppress pain , i.e. they cause analgesia (a state without pain). We divide them into:
- non-opioid analgesics that suppress inflammation and block the formation of prostaglandins . E.g. salicylates (ie drugs containing acetylsalicylic acid);
- opioid analgesics that act on opioid receptors in the CNS and other tissues. E.g. morphine , codeine , bezitramide, etc.
Opiod analgesics are used for very severe pain, while non-opiod analgesics are used quite widely.
