Arrhythmic storm

From WikiLectures

Arrhythmic storm is defined by at least 3 isolated and hemodynamically significant paroxysmal ventricular tachyarrhythmias within 24 hours. It is a life-threatening condition, which can be caused by:

  • myocardial ischemia,
  • acute decompensated heart failure,
  • electrolyte imbalance,
  • drug interactions,
  • hyperthyroidism, or
  • excessive alcohol use;

in more than 2/3 patients the cause is not clear.

The causal therapy is possible only in some cases:

  • treatment of hyperthyroidism,
  • revascularization, etc.

In some cases pharmacotherapy is used

When the pharmacotherapy is ineffective we consider carrying out these procedures:

  • catheter ablation and
  • modification of arrhythmogenic substrate.[1]
