Brief Resolved Unexplained Event is a term denoting a change in the appearance and behavior of a newborn or infant that cannot be explained by other circumstances . The episode lasts less than 1 minute, ends spontaneously (self-limiting) and must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Symptom icon.png cyanosis, Symptom icon.pngpallor;
  2. Symptom icon.png  change of tone;
  3. Symptom icon.png apnea or irregular breathing;
  4. reduced reactivity to stimuli from the environment.


It is a nosological unit replacing the previously used term ALTE (Apparent Life-Threatening Event). ALTE also included in its criteria a rubric and a description of the event in the eyes of the parent or caregiver as "life-threatening". Today, it is estimated that more than 50% of ALTEs would be explained after careful examination.
