Basic models of healthcare systems

Healthcare systems can be divided into two basic models according to the method of payment for the provided health care:

  1. Insurance-based health systems:
    • public (compulsory) health insurance – Bismarckian model of health care;
    • private (voluntary) health insurance – liberal model of healthcare (market healthcare).
  2. State health care' (health care paid for by public funds, taxes) - national health service:
    • Beveridge model;
    • Semaška's model.
