Prerequisites and co-requisites: tissue fluid production, HEB permeability, paraventricular organs.

brain edema

Edema[edit | edit source]

Fluid accumulation in the brain - increase in brain volume - due to the pressure-volume curve increase in intracranial pressure

Classification

  • vasogenic
  • cytotoxic
  • osmotic
  • hydrostatic
  • ischemic (combination of vasogenic and cytotoxic)

Consequences - intracranial hypertension - restriction of blood flow to the brain! Symptoms identical to intracranial hypertension.

BBB[edit | edit source]

  • Development during life (newborns)
  • Disorders - inflammation, ischemia, radiation
  • Increasing system pressure
  • ECT osmolality changes (water poisoning)
  • Drug permeability (ATB, dopamine)
