Catalog - what is it?[edit | edit source]
- Secondary information source..
- A set of records on individual documents processed according to agreed (formalized) rules (cataloging rules), which the given institution keeps in its funds or which it permanently or temporarily makes available.
- Basic building unit – cataloging record (bibliographic, location, research).
Cataloging records[edit | edit source]
- bibliographic data,
- location data,
- selection data.
Types of catalogs[edit | edit source]
- By form:
- leafy,
- bundle,
- electronic
- For completeness:
- complete,
- partial,
- comprehensive.
- According to the type of documents made available:
- books,
- periodicals,
- special documents.
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) – publicly available online catalogue. It enables the search of document records, user account management, access to other information sources.
How and where to start[edit | edit source]
- I formulate an "information request" and put the topic in context (MeSH).
- What resources do I want? Books, articles, Czech or English, printed or electronic?
File catalogs[edit | edit source]
- A catalog containing in part or in whole the records of the documents of more than one library or information institution.
- Records contain library symbols that identify the owner of the document
- Sigla - unique location marker of the library (ABB001).

Czech National Bibliography – CNB[edit | edit source]
- records of documents issued on the territory of the Czech Republic,
- compulsory copy – National Library, Moravian Provincial Library, Science Library in Olomouc → the most complete collections of domestic production.
