Encephalopathy

Encephalopathy is a descriptive term for global brain dysfunction. Depending on the cause, it can be a number of disorders with a primary cause in the brain tissue or outside the brain. The disorder itself can be reversible or irreversible, depending on the circumstances.
Examples:
- Encephalopathy in congenital metabolic disorders, eg. some mitochondrial disorders or glycine encephalopathy
- Hepatic encephalopathy
- Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
- Encephalopathy in uremic syndrome
- Encephalopathy from eating disorders, toxonutritive encephalopathy (eg. Wernicke's encephalopathy)
- Hypertensive encephalopathy in hypertensive crisis
- Hypertension from chronic trauma (so-called boxer's dementia)
- Spongiform encephalopathy (prion diseases)
