Female reproductive system (Organa genitalia feminina)[edit | edit source]

  • ensures the formation of sex cells, eggs and sex hormones
  • the ovary is the gonad → connects to the fallopian tube → uterus → vagina

External genital organs[edit | edit source]

Mons pubis[edit | edit source]

It is a fat pad located anteriorly to pubic symphysis. The skin above it is covered with hair.

Labia majora[edit | edit source]

The labia majora are formed by elongated skin mounds filled with fatty tissue. They contain a spongy vein plexus. The outer / lateral side is covered with hairs.

Labia minora[edit | edit source]

Flat internal mucosal cilia (formed by mucous membrane) surrounding the vaginal vestibule. Located medial to labia majora.

Vestibular glands[edit | edit source]

The vestibular glands are located under the mucous membrane of the vaginal entrance. The largest is a pair of pea-sized Bartholin's glands that drain onto the underside of the labia minora.

Clitoris[edit | edit source]

Erogenous structure that is located inferiorly to the mons pubis. Most of the clitoris is located internally and only the glans part can be seen externally. Its structure corresponds to the corpora cavernosa of the penis.

Vasculature[edit | edit source]

The external female genital organs are supplied by the internal pudendal arteries (branch of the internal iliac artery).

Perineum[edit | edit source]

Perineum is the patch of skin located between your genitals and anus. In females - between vagina and anus and in males - between scrotum and anus. Perineum is an erogenous zone. It has numerous nerves present that help with sexual arousal and response.

If you are a female, your perineum contains structures that help you give birth. Your perineum also forms a foundation that helps support your pelvic floor muscles, which hold organs in place.

Diagrams sometimes show the perineum’s boundaries as diamond-shaped, with an imaginary line drawn through it horizontally. This imaginary line divides the diamond into two triangle-shaped regions: the urogenital triangle and the anal triangle.

  • Urogenital triangle - Has genitals, urethra and associated muscles.
  • Anal triangle - Has anus and anal sphincter.
