Fontaine classification

The Fontaine classification is used to describe the stage of peripheral arterial disease. Rutherford classification is also used. The classification assesses the presence of claudication during walking, at rest and skin and soft tissue involvement.

Stage Clinical signs
I asymptomatic stage
II IIa claudication over 200 m
IIb claudication below 200 m
III resting ischaemic pain
IV skin necrosis, defects, gangrene
