The histone code represents the hypothesis that chemical (post-translational) modification of histone proteins (primarily their amino-terminal ends) regulates gene transcription. The most common histone modifications include acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitination, sumoylation and ADP-ribosylation.
