Howell-Jolly bodies

Howell-Jolly bodies are basophilic bodies in erythrocytes, their basis is DNA residues. Normally they occur only occasionally, their presence is a sign of damage to the Spleen. They appear in the following conditions:
- state after splenectomy,
- spleen trauma,
- damage to the spleen in sickle cell disease,
- trophy of the spleen, which sometimes accompanies celiac disease,
- damage to the spleen during radiotherapy,
- hemolytic anemia,
- megaloblastic anemia,
- myelodysplastic syndrome,
- hereditary spherocytosis.
