Neomycin

Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with very low allergic potential and minimal local irritation. These qualities allow both topical and oral administration of the antibiotic. When administered orally it is not absorbed in the intestinal lumen and it has local effect there .

Spectrum[edit | edit source]

Its antimicrobial spectrum includes Gram-negative bacteria (except Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and staphylococci.

Indication[edit | edit source]

Neomycin sulfate in combination with bacitracin is called Framycoin, which is used in treatment of the skin infections. It's available as a powder or as an ointment.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Systemic absorption is undesirable, because neomycin has strong nephrotoxic, ototoxic and neurotoxic effects.
