General classification of diabetes
According to the current etiological classification[1] diabetes mellitus (DM) is divided into:
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus,
- other specific types of diabetes mellitus,
- Gestational diabetes mellitus.
Specific types of DM
Other specific types of diabetes mellitus include (taken from[2]):
- Genetic disorders of β-cell function.
- Genetic disorders of insulin action.
- Diseases of the exocrine part of the pancreas
- Pancreatitis.
- Trauma, pancreatectomy.
- Tumors.
- Cystic Fibrosis.
- Hemochromatosis.
- Other.
- Endocrinopathy,
- Drug- or chemically- induced diabetes.
- Infection.
- congenital rubella.
- Cytomegalovirus.
- Other.
- Unusual types of immune-mediated diabetes.
- Other genetic syndromes that may be associated with diabetes.
