Peritoneal carcinomatosis
Pseudomyxoma peritonei or peritoneal carcinomatosis is a rare disease on the borderline between benign and malignant type of tumor. The abdominal cavity is filled with gelatinous (gelatinous) masses with mucin-producing cells or gelatinous ascites. If this condition is not treated, the tumors grow and, together with the mucin produced, oppress the surrounding organs.
The most common cause is mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix (a tumor of glandular origin). There may also be ovarian tumors and, less frequently, tumors of the breast, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, intestines, bladder or lungs.
In the past, the palliative method was the only treatment method for this type of tumor. cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is now being used along with HIPEC.
