preview Physiological solution is a 0.9% NaCl solution. The concentration of sodium and chlorides in 1 liter of F1/1 is 154 mmol/l and other ions are not represented. The solution has an osmolarity of 308 mmol/l, which is approximately the same as [[plasma]. It is therefore referred to as iso-osmolar.
Saline is often used as a base for rehydration infusion therapy and to dilute intravenous medications. Despite its name, however, it does not have a physiological composition of ions, its administration in larger quantities can cause hypernatremia, hyperchloremia, and thus metabolic acidosis (this property is then used in indicated cases to infusion correction metabolic alkalosis).
