Pyemia

Pyemia is a condition where infected thrombi or pus circulates in the blood.
There are three types of pyemia:
- Central – the source of the infected thrombus is in the heart (bacterial endocarditis).
- Peripheral - the source is in the venous bed (thrombophlebitis DK, purulent thrombus in the rafts from mastoiditis, puerperal sepsis, osteomyelitis).
- Portal - the source is in the basin of v. portae (cholecystitis, appendicitis, diverticulitis).
Complications: septic emboli, metastatic abscess, septic infarction.
