Q-Tip test

The Q-TIP test is an examination used in gynecology and obstetrics as part of the search for the causes of urinary incontinence. It enables an orientation assessment of the urethra and the mobility of the urethrovesical junction. A sterile lubricated brush or possibly a urinary catheter is inserted into the urethra to the level of the bladder neck. We encourage the patient to push. Using a protractor, we measure the rotational movement of the brush around the symphysis at rest and when pushing. A change greater than 30° (positive test) indicates urethral hypermobility. Nowadays, ultrasound is more often used to evaluate this parameter, however, the test can still be used in outpatient settings.
