Steroid myopathy
From WikiLectures
Steroid myopathy occurs in disorders of the adrenal gland, endocrine hyperadrenalism or significantly more often when cortikosteroids are administered. Steroids disrupt muscle metabolism.
Risky corticosteroids include mainly fluorinated steroids with long-term use - triamcinolone, dexamethasone.
Clinical picture[edit | edit source]
Clinical picture myopathic syndrom develops with atrophy of the girdle muscles, mainly of the lower limbs.
Local myopathy can sometimes occur after an IM injection.
Prevention and treatment[edit | edit source]
The main prevention and treatment is the reduction of steroid doses in single doses administered every other day.
