Streptococcus suis

Streptococcus suis belongs to the facultatively anaerobic G+ (Gram positive) cocci. These bacteria appear blue to bluish-purple after Gram staining.
Together with Streptococcus equi, Streptococcus dysgalactie, Streptococcus canis are classified as zoopathogenic streptococci. The Streptococcus suis strains are of porcine origin and contain R, S and D antigens. Bacteria isolated from humans belonged to group R and habitat 2, these patients suffered from meningitis or rarely septicemia. Pathogenesis occurs in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system. On the blood agar of sheep erythrocytes are alpha-hemolytic.
