The cooling effect of the environment or refrigeration has a significant effect on thermal comfort of a person. The cooling effect is determined by many factors, such as ambient temperature, ambient humidity and wind speed.

The cooling effect of the environment can be quantified using the quantity Cat value H, unit:

.

The device that measures the temperature is called a temperature meter.

To express the effect of wind on thermal comfort of a person, the so-called wind chill temperature is now commonly used, also effective temperature, often also as feeling temperature. It can be calculated using a relationship that includes the ambient temperature and wind speed. Wind speed can be obtained using an anemometer.
