Specimen nr. 1[edit | edit source]
Name: Thyroid gland (HE)
Description: the follicles of thyroid gland are lined with simple cuboidal epithelium, i.e. the cells are as wide as they are tall. The nucleus is round and located in the center of the cell. The follicles are filled with colloid (thyreoglobulin).
Specimen nr. 2[edit | edit source]
Name: Thyroid gland (HE)
Description: The epithelium in hypofunctional thyroid gland (lack of iodine in diet,...) is shorter, so we can see simple squamous epithelium.
Specimen nr. 3[edit | edit source]
Name: Thyroid gland (HE)
Description: The colloid precipitates in the middle of the follicle, which creates a gap between cells and the colloid. The specimen can also deform during slicing. Both changes are artefacts, i.e. they are made during preparation of the specimen.
Specimen nr. 4[edit | edit source]
Name: Thyroid gland (HE)
Description: Thyroid gland in low magnification. We can see both normal and hypofunctional follicles here.
