Aspiration pneumopathy (neonatology)

Aspiration pneumopathies of newborns include:
- Meconium aspiration syndrome;
- complex respiratory disease of the newborn that arose early after birth due to the penetration of meconium particles (smelt) into the lower respiratory tract;[1]
- Aspiration of blood during cesarean delivery or vaginal delivery with placental abruption → early-onset respiratory distress of the newborn;
- Aspiration of water during birth into water;
- Aspiration during sucking/swallowing dyscoordination
- risk factors: immaturity, structural malformations, neurological abnormalities, cleft palate, Pierre Robin syndrome, tracheoesophageal fistula, cleft larynx, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, Prader-Willi syndrome, ...
- Aspiration due to gastro-oesophageal reflux, massive regurgitation and inhalation of food.[2]
