Autolysis
From WikiLectures
Autolysis is the spontaneous decomposition of the removed tissue by the action of its own enzymes. The most important thing when processing of the histological specimen, is to preserve the structure of the tissue, i.e. to prevent autolysis. It can make other histological procedures, such as staining, impossible.
